You know when you have moments in your life that, even if they are tough, they put you in front of important decisions that will shape the rest of your life? This post is about mine. And my story after.
This happened to me in the first half of 2017. I was in a job I hated, working evenings and weekends to give my best to it (that’s what I had learnt – work is work, it doesn’t matter if you like it, you give your best) and had already entered burnout, though I didn’t know at the time what that meant.
The job sounded very well on paper, was paying very well, and I had a team of ~20 people and good growth opportunities. And yet, I was as unhappy as I had ever been in a job.
It took hitting rock bottom and then allowing myself some reflection time to understand that I needed to change things.
And then, becoming my own boss clarified to be a direction I wanted to follow. Then, it got even clearer: I wanted to become a freelance trainer, certified in the Process Communication Model (PCM).
PCM was a training course I had attended two years before and, out of the more than a dozen courses I had attended in the last few years, had been the only one I had applied from the first day and was still applying it to my life.
Additionally, I had trained to become a trainer since university times, and also, as part of some of my previous jobs, I had delivered training. So, I knew I loved that!
Long story short, that year I got certified in PCM and resigned from my role and I took the jump into self-employment and entrepreneurship.
It has been a bumpy road and in the first years, I did not advance much with my training business as I didn’t have a clue about how to do that…
But this changed when, around the end of 2019, I joined a trainers community in the UK (where I lived, at the time), led by Sharon Gaskin – Freelance Trainers Coach 🌻. This proved to be a game-changer for me. You know when people say: “find your tribe!” Well, that was my tribe! And it totally changed my journey.
Slowly but surely, I could see how my business grew, and how the amazing feedback I received built the path for more companies and individuals to work with me. In a couple of years, I could support myself just from training and gained several 5-star repeat clients.
And… I had gained not only a job – but a passion and a mission.
There’s still plenty of work to do, and still a lot to learn, but, looking back on how my story and my life changed for the best, now I know it was one of the best decisions I ever made.
Scary as &^$*, but when you have a tribe to support you, it’s a lot easier…
So, let me ask you: have you found your tribe?
Stay happy, stay healthy, stay safe,
Magda.
PS: This article is based on this LinkedIn post I wrote in January. Given the amazing feedback I received for it and messages about how some people were inspired to follow their passion and their mission, I thought I would share it here too.
